    Opti rebuild

I am rebuilding a 3.0 L Optimax and before it get i tall back together I have a question about extra oil for first couple hours..??? I read in the shop manual about the ECU adds extra oil for the first couple hours and then goes back to normal. This engine has hours on it and I do not understand how to set the ecu to add the extra oil for break in as it has all new pistons and one new sleeve now. Tony Brucato said he does not do OPTI ecu's... how are local shops doing it? Thanks for info and any helpful input.

I can take it to a local shop and get it done before I crank it up. He has the software for it.

Hey bob couple ways you reset optimax computer for breakin. Mercury ddt or turn ignition key don't start and move gear selector between neutral n forward three times. Must be done quick. You should hear the oil pump pumping. When I did my 2003 optimax rebuild and started up on engine stand i jumped the neutral safety switch breaking circuit three times to reset ecm breakin. Again you should hear oil pump pumping if next to powerhead.

    Hope this helps

Thanks, 2jz I can d that myself and I will runit for the first few hours myself too instead of turning it back over to the owner to do all the break in.. I will go to the lake with it myself an go real easy on it. Seems like they should give it more break in time on extra oil than 2 hours or that is what I got out of reading my shop manual.
I am a 2.5L man myself.. I like the old school stuff. Before gas got too high priced I liked the 2.4 modified and 2.0 mods. They would scream all day but they do like fuel and oil.

My 3.0 was in break in mode for 120 minutes when mercury reflashed it but the has to be a certain amount of load on it to clock off the minutes. It will also reduce it power out put to about 75% at wot. Jmo

Well this one will not see any WOT for more than 2 hours of running.. The manual says 120 minutes or 2 hours of added oil.. IMO they run them on too little oil anyway. Seems like they would have a special oil with an additive in it to break friction. I have seen something a few years back that was designed for stand by generators which were 4 stroke diesels which start at full rpms when they start up.. They also use an electric oil pump that builds oil pressure about a minute before it cranks up. They call that a pre-lube oil system. But the OPTI's run at about 400:1 @ idling and 60:1 @ WOT is not a lot of oil.. I suppose that's why they only turn them 5600 rpm. The life of an engine is based on keeping the oil going to it. It gets just enough oil to survive..

IMO the optimax has only oil on the rotating assembly so not much oil is required. Now your non optimax 2.4 2.5 have to run much more oil because you have oil and gas mix on the rotating assembly. As far as it only turn 5600 rpm is mercury way of detuning performance. Example 250 optimax is not far off in performance to a 250 pro xs and 250xs. IMO rpm and reeds set performance between them. Oiling system is all the same.

I am still a 2.5 man myself. I am just rebuilding this OPTI for a customer and friend.. Actually it is almost amazing that a 2 stroke even holds together at all. Got to be some very good oil.

The opti still operates like a normal 2 stroke with intake ports. Oil will still flow to the cylinder. The dfi just adds enough air to mist the fuel. Port timing is different on pro pxs ect. Along with computer stuff like ignition timing fuel mapping. You can run the extra oil repeatedly though till your comfy it's broke in.
