Adding Start and Stop dash Toggle Switches

I would like to move my regular key switches into the console and have just a Momentary toggle to START and an On/OFF toggle to run and stop the engine.

Procedure would be to turn the keys to the RUN position at the beginning of the boating day and use the toggles on the dash to start and stop the engines as needed during the day.

The START should be relatively simple, just run the Yellow/Red wire to the Momentary On/Off toggle.

The main On/Off is the issue here - how to wire that so when set to ON the gauges come on, hour meter runs etc but when you set to OFF the engine stops and everything is off just like if you turned the key to OFF.

How to wire the On/Off ? 2 pole?
Can this be done with a single on/Off, or do I need a third Momentary to kill the engine?

    Red- 12v
    Purple - Key on power
    Yellow/Red - START
The black/yellow wire is the kill circuit that needs to go to ground to stop the engine.
    Black - ground

thanks, I know this can be done, because I had a boat once with this set up it was effective keeping the sea water out of the key switches (wet boat)

run the on/off switch in series with the main key switch on off power. i would suggest using a switch guard on your on off switch as well so the switch cant be tripped accidentally cutting your engine at say full speed.

My 24 Skater is setup exactly like that. It has the military toggle switches from Livorsi. They don't have a cover or anything, but they require you to pull the toggle out and then move it to on/off so it can't be accidentally tripped. I have the momentary for the starter that requires you to hold it in the up/on position until the engine cranks over, then the switch returns to it's down/off position. I do not have keys for the boat (actually works out well, don't have to worry about forgetting them anywhere), and the battery switches are located out of sight. That's the only way to keep someone from starting the boat if I'm not there with my beretta to convince them not to bother my stuff.

Problem for you is that I did not wire the boat, the previous owner did. He is a member here (lightspeed) so maybe you want to PM him and ask him how it's done.

Thank you for the replies, I will PM light speed just to be sure.

Really the only big question is if the engine will quit when the RED 12v is cut off.

Like I said, mine is wired with the on/off and when I toggle it from on to off, it turns off

How about a double-pole ON/OFF/MOMENTARY switch? Like Grainger #2TPU7. This would act like the key switch. Down for off/kill, middle to run, and up/momentary to start. This switch will snap to down and center, but will spring back to center from the up position.

One pole would throw the kill wire to ground, the other pole would throw +12v to start. The downside is that this configuration could not switch the red 12v line to the motor on/off. The ECU would still get power as long as the key is on.

In any case, cold start enrichment would require a second hand to push in the key button.

I took apart the key switch yesterday, seems that turning the key back to OFF just kills the 12v feed, it appears not to connect the Black/yellow to ground in order to kill the ignition.

This being the case a simple ON/OFF will suffice to feed 12v to the key switch to run and then to kill the ignition by cutting off 12v to Stop, and a MOM On/Off fed from the hot side of the main On/Off to the Yel/red to start.

The actual key switches will be relocated into the dry console, keys turned to the RUN position. Right?

What did you do for correct wiring on this set-up? Any info to share?

I did not do anything yet on account of a foot of snow. I will do a mock test first with temporary switches, see if cutting off the main 12v to the key switch really does kill the engine. If so then I'm good to go. Will post about it.

The Opti needs 12v return on the purple wire to run, cut that, the motor stops, all the gauges go dead
    Simple switch, easy to do.
