Evinrude 35 - weird kill switch problem - looking for ideas...

I just picked up a low hour 1982 Evinrude 35 hp, 2 cyl. Was long neglected but had little use. After freshening things up, it runs just fine. However, the kill switch was not hooked up. I'm installing a kill switch with a lanyard (since it's a tiller motor going on a 12' racing inflatable catamaran) and I ran into a problem.

Grounding the yellow and black wire from the power pack does not short the ignition system. There does not appear to be any discontinuity in the wire but when I short it to the block the motor still has spark.

    - Does this mean the power pack is faulty?
    - Can a power pack function correctly with a defective kill circuit?
    - Is there another way to kill the ignition?
    - Could I use the kill switch in open position to interrupt the power pack ground to stop? Would that damage the power pack?

    Advice appreciated.

Yeah, the kill circuit on the pack seems to be bad. However, the motor runs just fine otherwise. If I rigged up the kill switch so that it interrupted the powerpack's ground circuit instead, would that kill the pack?

Got a shiny new Sierra power pack and all is well. Never knew a pack could work fine with a dead kill circuit. Learn something new every day...
