I think most of that has to do w/the rules. Don't remember specifics but I think you get penalized (weight) the bigger your motor is and the more gas it uses.
Based on that, I think the fastest O/B motors end up being the 2.0 Mercs.

Bobby to run anything over 2.5 it has to be 100 percent stock. We asked for a 3 liter with added weight but were not allowed. Also I dont own the boat just prep it.

But you still own the molds right! Yea Alan i hear ya. I also read that their may be a new class next year. Something like unlimited outboard or modified outboard.
