Best oil in Pro Xs
Hi I have a pro xs on my fishing boat. I was running DFI oil, then ran out of 5 gallons after about 2-3 months. So now I've been running mercury premium plus and it runs fine and is easier on the wallet, but the idle quality is not to great. I mostly run between 4500-5000 rpms. Are there any good clean burning oils under 36$ a gallon for the pro xs? Thank you

If I recall, I think on a previous thread everyone said DFI oil was best for idling and had less carbon fouling at slow speeds but premium plus had better higher speed lubrication properties. Premium plus where I'm at is $29 unless it's gone up recently.

Is it time to change spark plugs? I had a 225 Pro Xs for a few years and ran nothing but the Merc Premium Plus. Never had an issue. We skied a lot and it ran great.

check with you local dealer, We carry it in bulk @ 23.99 a gal for the dfi oil. Most dealers that sell a lot of boats or motor's will have a 55 gal drum of each.

Ok thanks. So the pennzoil xlf is a good oil for the pro xs? Is it ok If I just keep running premium plus or is the dfi oil a lot better?

Dfi oil is the better choice.. Burns a lot cleaner and will help the air injector stay clean .

I don't know about that. The manual for my 250xs optimax says specifically NOT to use DFI oil and to use premium plus. I did a lot of research on this before I started running the penzoil xlf. It seems the DFI oil is better for low speed operation for trolling and things like that because the detergents keep the engine clean but the DFI oil doesn't protect as well at the high RPM's these mercury racing motors run at which is why mercury racing wants you to run the premium plus. I can tell you I've been impressed with how clean this XLF oil burns.

You are correct, the old recomended oil was premium plus , but there as a change at the end of October 2010. This change included all DFI (non race) and Pro xs motors. in a 250xs or 300 xs i would still use the premium plus . I for one have pulled motors apart that have had nothing but dfi oil in and the internals of that motor looked imaculate other than a scored piston from a broken reed pedal. this motor had over 800 hrs on it.

Run what Mercury recomends! Especially if your under warranty. Many dealers can refill your jug from a 55 gallon drum and save you $10.00 per gallon.
