First post! Help picking out a new prop! Evinrude XP question?

Hey guys! I have a 78 Baja 16ss with a 1990 evinrude 100XP on her. I'm running a 19" ballistic prop right now off my old 85 and it's just way to small! It hits 5500 way to easily. Right now my fuel tank is in the front, but by spring time it'll be in the rear and I'll have a jackplate on it. I'm running 51 mph (GPS) with my 19" right now. A friend of mine has the same boat with a mercury 115 24" laser2 and gets 67. Think I should go 22"? If so, what brand/model? Also I hear the evinrude XP series put out roughly 10% more than the label say, is this true?

    10%

It is, I myself have an 86 XP 200 looper on my Shadow basser that feels more like a 225. With your setup I'd try a 22"p. chopper big ear if you can find one.

I'd wait until I havethe boat set up the way I wanted it. Changing props then redistributing the weight and adding a jack plate is putting the cart before the horse IMHO. Prop should come last.

JohnR does make a good point. I forgot you were adding things when I posted. I agree with his assessment. Propping should come last.

Id prop it to run closer to 6000rpm so 19P may be where you need to be. Dont even try to run that Ballistic with a jack plate. Those props hate to be anywhere near the surface. Look for a 18P-20P Raker. When Dialed in you should be running in the Mid 50s.

ALSO, there is no way your friend is running 67mph in a Baja with a 125HP Merc! BS.

I can bury the needle past the 6k mark on my tach I just wasn't sure what rpm I should be running at WOT but I cruise at 5500 with 15-20% throttle left. And I've been in his boat doing 64 mph GPS so I believe 67 at the over-revving point is possible. But I'll get my setup all set this winter before I try a new prop!

You also can't prop it for top end based on how quickly it gets to something less than max RPM. You'll have to bolt on the setup you're going to run and see what it turns wide open and trimmed out. Of course if it's slamming off the limiter the value of the info will be limited.

I have an 84 16' Baja - it has a small pad, does yours? I did have a 100GT Johnson on it, best was mid 50's with a 23 DAH SRX. A DAH 21 Renegade was a couple of mph slower but accelerated better. A 20 small ear chopper ran well, but wasn't enough pitch. 4" manual jackplate, maybe 3-4" below the pad. Height wasn't critical with that set up. Plus or minus an inch barely mattered.

Now I've got a 115 HO Etec. 62 with a 24 Raker. A bit more with over hub props (27 Hoss copy, 26 small ear chopper).

My prop calculator says 7000+ rpm to get 67 with a 4 cyl 115 Merc (2.15 gears) and a 24 Laser. Ain't happening
    Is it an inline 6?

Yeah mines got a small pad also. I have a TH marine 6" setback manual jackplate on order. Gonna move my tank around possibly this week and gonna start saving for prolly a 22" raker! As for my friend it's a inline 6, not sure if his prop has been modded or original(bought it used) or if his gps speedo is off

Can inlines turn 6500 rpm? Or his slip is very good.

I do like the Raker on mine, so the 22 is a probably a good choice
