jet boat cooling problem
I have a 1973 marlin jetboat with an olds 455 and a Berkeley jet drive.
The water jacket doesn't seem to fill up therefore its over heating. Anyone got any ideas of where I should start. And if it turns out to be in the jet know of any repair places in the metro area that would be willing to work on it.

Read this article. It seems to be the best written & much easier than someone trying to tell you how. Jet Boat Plumbing

if the boat is moving at all fwd or reverse and you have low water supply then somehow the feed hole off of the pump must be clogged. or you have it routed in a way where the water does not fill the block all the way. i didnt click on it but if the article posted above is the one i assume it is then it covers how improper water routing allows the water to exit the block without filling the heads completely.

I thought it might be clogged too but I hooked up a hose and it flowed nicely

Sounds like you may have a bad thrust bearing in them jet pump. It will let the impeller and shaft move forward under a load. This will "cut off" the water supply to the motor. You need to fix it before you go back to the lake. You can tear up a lot of parts including the main bearings in the motor and the suction housing on the pump if not addressed. I have seen it happen more than once.

Check you water intake lines - I had water jacket/exhaust manifold off on one side and after put it back together everything looked like I hooked them up backwards but no - not much help but something to consider
