28 SPL Evinrude
Bought a 28 SPL Evinrude. What does SPL designate? I assume this is a 100:1 motor. Drained lube and it was black and smelly but no metal or water. Can I use Merc Gear Lube+ or is there something specific. Motor started and ran fine for a minute then would not hardly run. Took carb apart and removed about a pound and a half of crud so it should be fine now. I have owned several OMCs but this is the first one I have used. Anything I should watch or look out for other than the usual things. Thanks

SPL = special... SPL's were stripped down/basic models. I depends on what hp/model/year as to what would make it a SPL motor, typically SPL's didnt have oil injection (VRO), PT/T, had the smallest charging system available for a particular motor etc...
Your gonna want to mix at 50:1, Merc L.U. lube is fine... Their great motors!Dan Cario

28 SPL(special) were 30 ho powerhead with 25 hp gearcase. Nonthu-hub. originally 100/1 fuel oil ratio that OMC scrubb'd and modify'd to 50/1, remote control only, no tiller models.

SPL. Over the years I've heard many versions as one of my best buddies Dad was a OMC dealer.
Special Styling Long Shaft. Standard Pre-Mix Long Shaft
