    1978 Mercury 800 mid section

Alright everybody heres the question. I have found a 1978 Merc 800 with a 15" mid section...cool! The problem is it has manual trim... no hydro cyclinders. Is there any way to steal the hydro cyclinders off a 76' 20" merc mid section? Or am i stuck spending $700 on a trim tilt jack plate!

The older 1976 parts should interchange with little difficulty. They would up until Mercury built the trim into the bracket assembly where the pump mounted with the engine outside the boat. Just remember to remove the reverse lock down from the engine without trim.

Added to what Eagle has said.

Yes the 15 and 20 inch motors from this era take the same trim cyls. Its a 4 line two trim ram set up . One ram on each side in place of the shocks.

I think they started this system in the mid 60's . Ive used the same trim set up on my 60's motors up til the 80's 1986 they went internal.

Now the 800 was only made from 1969-1972ish I believe. Starting in 1973 it was called the 850 The 800 and 850 do not share bolt patterns. The 800 mid is the same as a 1350 mid. The 850 is the same as a 1500 mid.

So you can put a L-6 power head on these L-4 mids if you wish.

Thank you sir for the advice
I believe in 1978-79 the brought back the 800. Why those years i don't know but the serial number reads 4832133. i have a 74' 50hp with a 20 " mid and i'm going to try to swap the trim over to this 78' 800 with a 15" mid and hope it works. Looks like it would bolt right up! we'll see

I did not know they had an 800 during those years. I thought it was always the 850! Thanks for the info, I learned something today.

But as far as the trim goes they should transfer back and forth .

I know in those years the big L-6's were being renamed as well. The 1500 became a 1400 with slight changes. Might just be the same thing.
