New thermostats and have inspected the poppet valve 3 times over the course of 3 weeks. I have not found a thing wrong with the cooling system but the motor overheats. It was running hot before with my coned 200 case (around 170 degrees or higher depending on how long i cruised slow) and its worse with my 2 hole cle on it. It has tripped the overheat alarm with the 2 hole cle. Water pressure is between 20-25lbs with either lower unit. Im going to try a different w/p gauge this week. Any thoughts? Is it possible that something plugging a dump hole in the adaptor plate would cause overheating?
If all is good it might be an obstruction.

Ended up the motor was too high with the 2 hole cle vs the coned case that broke. I had 20-25lbs pressure but it must have been grabbing air with the water. We dropped the motor down 2 clicks on the jackplate and its pulling 30-35 pounds of pressure on the w/p gauge and i never saw over 160 degrees on the temp gauge. Double checked it once back in the lift with a laser temp gun and it was 163 degrees starboard and 155 degrees port. These are head temps

    Good news for sure!!

We have been out two more times....motor running a lot better. consistent temps between 115-125* with Idle pressure @ 3.8-5psi.

    Good news!

Now put that exhaust block-off plate back on next time you are boating. I realy doubt this has anything to do with it!

I'm getting the temperature under control with my 200 powerhead on the 1 piece adapter.

I reduced the fitting outlet in the top of the head where the hose runs from it to the popet cover.

Anyone a clue why this heats up the motor? I think it should just be the opposite because it relieves water before it runs through the cylinders etc to cool the block. So when you reduce the outlet more water will flow through the block and cool the engine more... It seems this is not in the case in real life testing.

Now thats something I've wondered about...our poppet cover has no hose, same as the 225x PM, but.. PM did not have the fitting in the cover, the XS does have a brass plug.

We were hoping to get out this weekend but the weather is not cooperating. Looks like the Season is pretty much over.

I've said before what needs to be done is emulate a two piece plate. So here I am welding in a piece of aluminum angle to isolate the poppet dump. Then I will take my two piece plates, measure any and all of the water drains. Then tap and plug the water dumps in the one piece plate and drill holes in the plugs measuring the same as the two piece. If the cowl pan doesn't have the hole for the poppet dump that had to be modified as well. Finally my poppet dump will exit through the side of the plate. When I switch between my pro max motor to a stupid motor I pull the two dump plugs, plug the poppet dump.
Tl/dr...just make a one piece work like a two.

My HST motor was done this way for years as was my Viper. I see 30+ Psi at speed with thermostat motors but as long as temps stay stable wot I can care less

Now we are to where I started. With the drains in the adapter mine was running too cold at idle.

You dont want any drains in the adapter at all at idle (just like the 2 piece).

With all the cold seizing talk on here I didn't like this.

Lyn, what with the fitting at the top of the block? Plugged? Do the tstats open at iele on your?,Does your promax has the stock cylinder jacket drains?
