Evinrude, 1913
Original promotional photo from 1913. You can see there seems to be some 'vintage' photo editing where the engine's exhaust is. That kind of photo editing was common back then, since photos were idealized as much as possible. I'm willing to bet that the engine was not even running in the photo, since there would be considerable smoke present if it were, thus the need to brush in the moving water behind the engine.

Very unlikely it is running...it's not the amount of smoke, but where it would be coming from...the cylindrical muffler on the port side. It would be spitting out the many tiny holes drilled in the back of it or out the bottom if the relief was open. IF it was doctored, they were also smart enough to brush out the crank handle on the flywheel to make it appear like it was blurred out from going around.
1910 version, with a "newer" ca. 1914/15 lower unit. The real early ones had no skeg:

If you look closely at the photo, e.g. the square jaw bone and the bushy eyebrows, you can see that it actually shows a man dressed as a woman.
This picture therefore represents the first known example of outboard drag racing, and we are now approaching the 100 year jubilee.Markus' Performance Boating Links:
