    60deg Johnson Lower unit HELP!

    new motor to me.

    off a 90hp ocean pro.

Sounds like the clutch dog is slipping. It happens every couple of minutes. Big bang.

Possibly a shift rod height issue? I've tried to find the height on the www and I can't get get to any of the measurements I've found.

Do i need to go ahead and pull it apart?

If so, how do I get the driveshaft out? I've removed the upper seal and bearing and the shaft moves up and down about an inch but won't come out. Use a bigger hammer?

A couple things to look for. Disconnect the shift cable at the motor and put the shift control in forward, full throttle and then put the shift linkage at the motor in forward and check to make sure 1) it is easy to shift and 2) the linkage lines up with the cable (might just need a cable adjustment). If it is real hard to shift, then the o-ring in the housing on the lower unit where the shift rod goes through is binding the shaft. Usually just replace the housing assembly. If it has been skipping for a long time, the clutch dog may be worn and need to be replaced.

thanks. I got a bit carried away with the dis-assembly thinking that the clutch was probably shot. But, now that you say this, I think I'm going to slap it back together and check the adjustment.

Any idea on the shift rod height? I'm at 21.5" with it basically screwed all the way in.

Usually about seven turns in,Like Fla bum said make sure the shift rod moves up and down smoothly, those orings love to get jammed up with salt,if it has been bangin for a while you may need to replace fwd gear and clutch dog.

If shift rod is all the way in you have an issue as thats gives the most forward. Service manual has the measurement and that is with the unit in nuetral.

Thanks for all the tips. Turns out the shift rod was only threaded in about 3 turns. At 9 turns I was able to get everything working great.
