How yo identify a mercury 200hp
I am going to look at a mercury 200hp . I am very familiar with the mercury 150 hp, this is a late 80s model by the way . What is the easiest way to determine it is a 200 hp and not a 150 or 175 with 200 hp decals . ? Not that i dont trust the guy , just want to make sure .

Look for a gray soft plug on top of the motor, with stamped numbers and letters. Provided you reserch a web site that gives you year and hp data. Copy and paste this data, print, and carry it with you. At the moment, you can try www.maxrules.com for this data.

CAP? YELLOW ? that means nothing on that vintage of 150 unless its a xr4 is a 2.0 ,a 200 is a 2.4!!!!! due to its age there could be a number or "IDEAS'' that could make it hard to identify pull the head measure the bore should be 3 3/8 if a 200, there is a build date stamped on the throttle side of the motor up near the connection of the trigger to the throttle arm or at the base of number 2 cylinder "that helps with the "late 80's year model" 2 pc heads or lost foam ??

my late 80s 200 has the numbers stamped on the block on the port side. think it is either under the flywheel or where the front half meets the block.

This just applies to an unmolested motor which might be a stretch.
'89 and older will have horizontal front half/reeds and have tha air box that look like a "pipe organ". '89 was also tha year tha newer style air box came out so it could be different. If it has tha newer style it could possibly be tha XR4 150 (or '89 175 efi converted ta carbs). Thats tha year it went to horizontal reeds . Also tha year tha clam shell went away. '88 and older will be tha clam shell. First sign of a 200 with clamshell is it will have only one "plastic" interlocking latch. if it has two of tha metal, spring type its not a 200. '89 was a a year of some change. No numbers on tha block, it might be a challenge ta get it right. '88 back is not a problem pickin' one out........... Provided it hasn't been "butchered"..........
JAN. Tha "cap" they are talkin' about is a welch plug. Looks like a freeze plug on top of tha block right behind tha flywheel. Some have a serial number stamped in 'em. Some will just have "200" stamped in 'em. Some won't have anything stamped in 'em......................Last edited by tlwjkw; 02-24-2013 at 11:05 AM.
