ID:	271416Hi everyone,
I just purchased a Tiller Steer Yamaha 40hp 3 cyl short shaft 40hm 6h4 s 000547. I am guessing its a 1984 - 1986 engine. I just want to find out the exact year of the motor. I believe there is supposed to be a letter under the last number of the serial number but there is nothing there (or at least its impossible to see). Can anyone help me tp identify the year of this engine? Is this letter im after stamped anywhere else? Also, is there anywhere to get old Yamaha catalogues? Would love to get one with the engine lineup for this year of engine.
    Thank you,
    Riverrat321.

Thanks for that. I didn't know the model codes were different in the USA. I was trying to research on the net and it seems there should be a letter under the last number, but I can't see one. The plate has some corrosion on it which is not helping. Would be great if this letter was stamped somewhere else on the engine so I could read it. Either that or a certain part on the engine that got changed every year or so so I could look up the model number. It seems this engine was produced between 1983 and 1993. Looking at the decals it looks to be between 1984 and 1989. Would love to know exactly though.

Are there any differences with decals between 1984 and 1989? To me they look the same for those 5 years.
