300XS sleeve question
Has anyone had any issues with the sleeves turning in the 300XS like the 250's were doing? Just curious if this problem also followed the 300XS line. Will a turned sleeve show up on a loaded cylinder balance test?

Can't say I have personally heard of it happening on any. A while back, a tech had told me by running a miss-fire test on the DDT while the boat was under load (so it'd have to up on plane and running) you could check for a turned sleeve. Never had any experience with the balance test nor know how accurate it is.

i have seen it on a few 300XS motors but not on any others in the XS line.....as for baance test i dont know but i can tell you every one that i saw that had a turned sleeve the motor ran perfect across the board but was a few hundred shy up top...no missing no nothing...and when the gamut of normal tests came back good i just pulled the heads and it was pretty obvious what had happened.....

Of all the years Merc did the sleeved motors in both the 2.5 and 3.0 motors what process did they change that led to this sleeve turning issue? I would assume if you had one of these motors with a turned sleeve a crafty person could heat block and devise a way to grab the sleeve and turn it back to it's proper position? Once properly located I gues you could drill partially into the sleeve and jacket material and "key" the sleeve? Guess there are several ways of retaining it, first and foremost would have been Merc to put enough interference fit into it to begin with..

im in one right now !!this motor has all of Eric Simon's Mods on it and it spun 4 sleeves and stuck # 6 the problem was Merc changed the interference diminsion on the sleeves Versus the sleeve holder, i just had my machine shop push all 6 sleeves out of a 2002 250 they were all .0025 thats only 21/2 thousandths interference instead of the 4 to 5 thousandths interference like thats on all the 2.5 motors, after looking at all the sleeves it looked like the 300 Promax had the most aggressive sleeve porting so thats what im putting back in ,it all will be .020 oversize on the outside Diameter and standard bore with some Vertex's back in it it ran good before maybe a lil better this time

Ouch.. Which motor and what year is this one your working on? I can't blieve they are running the interferance that loose.. Heck you could lay the block in the sun and put the sleeves in the freezer and push them in by hand at that spec....LOL
