Old V4 Swivel bracket swap?
I have a 1972 Johnson 100 HP motor on my MX-15 that runs great.
I'd like to swap the swivel bracket from a newer motor to gain the tilt tube steering and power trim.
What year and HP motor swivel bracket would interchange?

You would be able to fit most modern clamp brackets(v4 or v6) to your outboard with a little work.
You would have to make of find the upper bushing and use your orig. lower swivel bracket (the v shaped thing with the big nut holding the swivel tube)and swivel tube.
Try a search on "The shiny motor" this guy has done exactly what you are trying to do.Last edited by evilrude 1; 10-27-2012 at 08:36 PM.

here are the dimensions I came up with
upper, id=1.325, od=2.00 hieght=1.25
lower, id=1.325, od=1.50, don't remember what the height is.
The lower I was able to purchase at a local bearing supplier.
first pic shows new made bushing, trim unit upper, 1973 upper

Paul,
The "Shiny Motor" looks great. How did you polish it like that? How long does it stay shiny? Does it have clear coat?
I'm wondering what I should look for. Are the newer pivot shaft/swivel dimensions the same? Can I buy any swivel and adapt it with bushings? Are V4 and V6 the same?

Hey, if you'd be interested I've still got the midsection from a '90 Johnson 200 I parted out. It doesn't have the tilt/trim system, I sold that separately, but everything is there. You should be able to pick up the tilt/trim unit on ebay for around $200.

The paint was stripped with aircraft paint stripper, then sanded alot, then polished with a grinder with polishing wheel.
It was not cleared, I only used the motor one year, and I just dried it when done each time out. It is still shiny probably 6 years later.
I think the v4 and v6 are the same but I am not positive. I used one I had from a 1978 140.
Good luck with your project.
