    Mercury Outboard

I think I currently have a 249 Carb Merc race motor with a light weight flywheel and some high compression heads. The boat belonged to my father and I inherited it so I am still learning a lot as I don't know everything about it yet. I have a good 20" Mid Section with a low water pick up gear case from the factory I believe, not a bobs nose cone. not sure if that makes it better or worse. I am wanting to sell and upgrade to fuel injection 2 stroke motor and would like 300hp+ if possible. There is so many different motors on here how I do I know what I am looking for? Do I buy an entire new setup or is there a power head that will bolt up to my existing mid and gear case? Promax vs Optimax whats the difference?

Any idea on what my current power head would be worth? Click image for larger version.

Promax was/is Merc's high performance line (not race line). The 225 Promax was the most common. I wish I had one.

Optimax is Merc's name for their direct injected engines. Way more fuel efficient, but generally a bit heavier.

What's the boat? If it's not an Allison, and you have a Merc CLE gearcase, you are probably fine.

You can buy a direct injected 300XS for mere money. 500+ lb of fun, which is too much weight for some boats and just fine on others.

Maybe back up some. What is your boat and current speed. What are your goals for speed, fuel economy, ability to carry load, towing toys, etc?

I have an 86 Eliminator Liberty with a shallow V. My issue is some of the lakes around here are outlawing carb 2 stroke motors, you can run a 4 stroke or a fuel injected 2 stroke. Currently its running about 65-70 depending on which prop I have on it. I am looking to go fuel injected and of course go faster in the process. I do like to pull a skier or wake board here and there and have a good 4 blade prop I use just for towing. mostly its about upgrading to fuel injection.

Are Mercury power-heads universal in the sense that could I purchase a fuel injected 260 or 280 ROS and will it bolt up to my existing mid section and gear case? Would there be any adapters or other special parts I would need?
    Cheers,

    Trevor
