Checkmate playmate is it worth it
I have purchased a 2 seater checkmate playmate hull. I gave 30 dollars for it and someone hit it with a jet ski and done a number on it. There is a professional boat builder in the area that is willing to do repairs for around 400.00 dollars. Then it's a brand new everything. I have a 50 horse Johnson with 0 investment. The repairs will be professional being this guy manufactures boats. Is this a worthwhile investment if I wind up with a couple thousand in it.

Weigh all your options easy to tow, store, run. Only 2 seater small boat in rough waters and bam it's not a jet ski. What water you are in can you buy a better boat for the money you invest and at least if you build you know what is in it. I have way more in a project now including a year of my life but this is what I wanted. .02 Rick

Just a quick update. The boat will be restored. It will probably be dropped off mid novemberfor extensive fiberglass repair where some idiot hit it broadside with a jetski. I got rid of the 50 hp johnson and located a 1979 johnson stinger 75hp. Its a 20 inch shaft but maybe through restoration I can get a 15 inch shaft if not it will have to do. Thanks for the input I'm sure I will need more.

I think I would have stayed with the 50, for a start at least. I think you will be too heavy and powerful with the 75 for a play boat, not to mention that trim for a 15" will have to be fabricated. Just my 2cents worth, from someone who loved to overpower boats in his younger years!

Great little boat and built well too...all end grain balsa cored! Wildman had a thread on his Paradise splash of the Checkmate. He mounted v6 to the back of it for a short while!!

Hi,
Do you still have the Playmate and if so, what size prop are you running with? Top end speed?
I have one and am planning on putting a 70 OMC on her.
Thanks,Mitch

Mine is an '87 Playmate . Love it , will never be up for sale . We have a twenty hp limit at the local lake . It will still go 25 mph/gps with two adults . Before that it had a 60 hp that was good for 42 mph w/ two adults . I wanted to run two 20 hp motas but the park DNR guys said "no" .
