    steering slop

I have about an inch of free play at my steering wheel. The motor does not move when I try to move it by hand.

Allison SS2000, stock Ally dual steering.

How do I get the slop out?

You should be able to take some of the slop out at the motor end. One cable should have a bracket that holds it to the from of the motor at the tilt pin. On that bracket there should be a set of jam nuts. Take the slack out of the cables there. But be carfull not to get the cables in a bind by taking to much out. You will know if you do as the steering will be harder. Hope this helps

Your making me think now... My dual cable steering is very tight...but no slop - maybe it's just adjusted wrong. I've been thinking it was over greased - that would be awesome. Not to hijack the thread but ... I have 1" slop in my other boats hydraulic helm - is that possible to purge air or adjust somehow - both boats are new to me - I always had a single cable b4 and it was smooth as silk.

Most likely air in the lines. Use the bleeds at steering ram. Start a new thread with more info and we can walk you through it.

It didnt dawn own me that you may have hydraulic steering. If you have play in that system....I would get a cheap auto bleeder from a parts store, and bleed the system out at the rear cylinder. When I rebuilt the one in my Bearfoot ski boat, thats how I did it. Works great if you dont have anyone to help bleed it with you. Plus instead of cranking the steering wheel back and forth creating bubbles in the fluid, you are pulling a vacum from front to rear. Just make sure you do not pull more air in when you do it this way and keep the helm full at all times.

Sorry it looks like I confused everyone - David posted that he has "dual steering" which I am fairly certain he means cable. I jumped in and started talked about hydraulic - I'll start my own thread ...

Thats cool....both options are on here now. Did you find the bracket in the back I was talking about?

Thanks but I have not seen my boat since July 8. Maybe this weekend, but I have a lot of family up at the cottage.

David, if your unsure what's wrong, I'll come take a look at it! I'd rather be sure it's not more than a matter of taking out the play in the cables!pm me if you need help!
