1973 evinrude 85 is running rough at idle speed in gear.

Hey there, my evinrude 85 is acting up again. The motor starts fine and idles fine, but when it's put in gear there's a lot of vibration at low rpm. I checked the prop, it's ok no dents no dings. I also had to change bothe control cables. I'm wandering if the cables not being in adjustment could have something to do wt it?? Thanks

It idles well but as soon as you put it in gear it rattles the whole boat. When u get past about 2000rpm it dose a lot better. Now relizing it's a 40 year old motor ,it's never done this before. Thanks

I had a 1973 135HP and I know you have to have the correct plugs in it for it to run good. Also is the electric choke free? Or is it bound up? How is comperssion?

The plugs are right but a little old. The compression is good ,last time I checked. The electric choke has been removed.

How long ago have you checked the comp---It takes 1 flat-out run with crappy fuel to destroy a crossflow (ask me how I know)
if compression is good I would check the throttle linkages next (to see if the carbs open at the same rate.)
