    MERCURY gearcases?

I am looking at getting a low water pickup for my 20 inch 2.4 200 merc (1989 efi). I dont know whether I should send it out to Bob's machine or buy a housing and put my gears in it.

TWO questions: CAN my stock gears go into a CLE gearcase? What is the difference between CLE gearcase? I saw a guy that had one for sale that also had a bobs nosecone put on the cle gearcase, I thought the CLE already had a lwp?

I also know there are xr2 and xr4 lower units, not sure if they require different gears. Just seeing what I can put my gears into.

    Thanks guys

Takes a lot of special tools to set up the correct backlash in a LU, so you'd need to have someone do the swap. Would probably be cheaper to just put a cone on the case you have.

Thanks for the input. I have pulled the gears on a 2.6 L yamaha 220hp (86). All you had to do was remove the retaining ring and pull them out, then stuff them back in the case. Sounds like mercs are a bit different...

mercs aren't different!it's just changing cases that requires shimming!if you pull out the gears and put them back in the same case that's ok!

XR2 was 2:1 4.5" diameter case, same size as standard 200's. XR4/XR6 (not exactly same) were 1.78 gear 4.25" diameter case. I don't think the 4.5 case guts plug into the XR4/6 cases, but it has been done.

What kind of boat are you planning on using it on? If your not after that last 1 mph then I'd just stick with the case you have and put a cone and torque tab on it from Bobs. People will put a cone on a CLE case to lengthen it for better handling on some boats.

What/who is JC? If he has a website let me know. From bobs looks like 500 bucks for them to install a cone on your current case with all the finish work. Whats he charge?

JC's will paint it or primer it, most of us like the primer, 'cause it's faster. The primer is a real good quality that won't come off.

I was young and bashful back then.
Today,...I'd just knock on her door,..hand her the crab dope, and say, "Rub summa this on ya booger. I'll be back day after tomorrow".
