Depends on what you want to shoot - landscape, portrait, macro, wildlife, low light, etc.
Canon has lots of good lenses, you can also go with alternative manufacturers like Sigma.
Tells us what type of shots you are looking for...1983 Shadow 21, Yamaha 250 HPDI
1961 Grumman 13, Johnson 15, "Gunkhole"
1931 Hacker Hydro, Phantom 75
1930 Sea Lyon 28, Scripps 208, "Tomahawk"
1929 Chris Craft 24, Chrysler 115, "Reflection"

My $.02 if it still matters
I'm not clear what type of lens you are really looking for, but when I was shooting with a T1i I had very good results with the Canon 17-85mm for walk-around. The one extra mm on the close ups was invaluable to be able to get the whole car or boat in the shot from the middle of a crowd around it. and the extra range didn't hurt either. I have upgraded lenses since but I still like that lens a lot.
I used a Canon 70-300mm IS for boats on the water from shore and didn't like it quite as much. I would still recommend it, but the 70-300mm L IS I replaced it with is absolutely awesome and highly recommended if you can justify spending the money.

How large is the 70-300? can you use it most of the time or will it be too awkward? I would like a fairly compact lense. thanks for the input.
