How necessary is a transom plate?
I have a transom plate on my boat that goes over the top of the transom and down the front into the splash well (see attachment). I would like to redo the transom and eliminate the splash well. The transom has 2 knees on the inside, but they are about 4 ft. apart in order to make room for the gas tank.
Would I be able to ditch the transom plate after redoing the transom? I could also cut the top part off and just put the plate on the outside of the transom.
The boat sees heavy skiing use, but I hardly ever run it flat out any more.

If you build it strong enuf, the alum plate is just xtra weight you don't need.

I have seen a plate like yours ruin a transom. It would start to get play where it sleeves over the top. They should squeeze the transom. Not sleeve over the transom. Yours could be cut down the center. But if you build the new transom right, you wont need the plate. I hope I am making sense. Here is a pic of a plate that has the proper cut. Hope you guys can focus on the transom plate..... LOL

I'm having trouble seeing the plate. My eyes keep wandering back to that extra arm in the middle!
But seriously, I wouldn't even want it to cap the transom. The way the back of my boat curves down, I would like curve that all the way across and get rid of the splash well. I could put the old piece on the inside where the upper motor mount bolts go.
What can I do to make the transom stronger that the original plywood? Would Coosa be stronger?

To make the transom stronger, use more fiberglass. 1/4''to 3/8'' of glass on the inside where the bolts go thru is about rite. With washers on the bolts, no plate is usually needed. Also add some knees to the inside if possible.
