1999 Mercury 225 ProMax
I am buying a 99 Procraft with a 99 225 Optimax on it tomorrow. The motor only has 58 hours on it since new. No work has been done to it.
My question is this. I have read alot on how these motors blow up around 130 hours. I assume this motor is still in break in mode as well. Is there something i can do to prevent this from happening? Replace injectors, reprogram ECM's etc?
Thanks guys!Last edited by FisherBoats; 02-24-2012 at 09:14 AM.

its not in break in mode any more, I think break in only last the first 10hrs. It seems when they blow up they usuially eat #6 cyliner. I was told its usuially caused by super long idle times then sombody just pins it from idle to wide open. And since #6 is the lowest cylinder all the moisture collects in that cylinder and sort of hydrolocks it. AND cold water enters right below # 6 and warps the sleve causeing the piston to stick.
This is just what im told so dont think thats the only reason they blow up.
My 250 ate #6 at 480 hrs, I rebuilt it and have not had any problems since.

I was only able to test the middle right side cylinder (brainfart on the cyl #) and it tested 100#. However the engine was cold and I had all other plugs still in the motor. Can someone please tell me what the motor should be at for compression? One place I read 90-105# and a different place on here says 120-130 #. Can someone please verify the true spec please?
Thanks!
