    straight skeg vs swept skeg

what would be the result of running a swept skeg lower vs a straight skeg? i know the straight skeg has no torque tab, thinking about running a straight skeg sportmaster on my 21 skater. thanks!

I've wondered about that myself.....would there be speed difference running a tourque tab vs a stright skeg on a 100 mph boat?

I'm not sure about speed difference but there is a massive increase in steering torque not running a torque tab. I run wire rope wing steering on a light weight vee boat and without the torque tab you can't hold onto the steering wheel at high engine heights even with bungy cords as a compensator.

Jeff aka LTBmarine went over 120 in his t-1 with a strait skeg and a bobs tab on it. He said it never effected handling one bit, I wouldnt be scared to run one.

Aren't the straight skegs for twin applications?

Remember too... The tab isn't there just to counteract unpleasant torque at the steering wheel. It's there to counter the sideways paddlewheeling forces of the prop so the gearcase can actually track straight. A surfaced prop on a single outboard without the tab will result in the gearcase needing to be driven at a slight crab-walking angle through the water in order to keep the boat driving straight at speed. This is the recipe for blowout. A tabbed skeg tracking straight will have less drag, more speed and better handling than a plain skeg crabwalking on the verge of a blowout.

If you're going to run the straight skeg, put a tab on it. Taller prop pitches need a bigger tab...
