2004 Yamaha 300 HPDI Pros or Cons please???
Came accross a nice used sport boat with a 2004 Yamaha 300 HPDI (Don't have any more details than the that yet). Surfing the web I've read a handful of threads and complaints of the history of the earlier year models. I've also read others who have logged hundreds of hours with no issues other than the recall fixes. I'd prefer a Merc but the boat is already setup for a Yamaha so swapping engines is not an option. Any word pro or con is appreciated. Thanks.

Probably a isolated problem, but I had a 2005 300hpdi on a cc boat in my yard waiting for me to repair some gellcote. All at once smoke started pouring out of the cowl. Killed the batt sw. and pulled the cowl. The charging sys went up in smoke. Yamaha covered it under warr. Never said what happened. Owner said it never ran rite after that, and sold it. I would get the repair history if you can from a yam dealer.....

i know a set of piston's cost 1500 if you blow it up and the high psi pump is a but load of money to have cleaned , , an over all the 250 and 225 are better engines they dont surge at low speeds and with any Yamaha you realy need to drain the gear lube an smell it b4 you buy any thing or even talk money if it stinks really bad walk away , drives are not cheap and its a good indication on how that person took care of it , the high psi filter is 100 bux an ppl do not change them like they should eather , Im not try ing to bash Yamaha just trying to fill you in

They have had several updates to the 300s. Get the serial number and call Yamaha customer service and they can tell you if they have been done. They are very touchy about the fuel system as far as keeping it clean. Make sure there is a good water sep filter in the boat, not a cheap one and keep them changed often. Typical gearcase issues where in Offshore tournament type boats (contender, yellowfin, etc) mainly from being launch off waves at highspeeds.
