Sammamish Slough Boat Race and Sammamish Slough Ski Race

Here are a few photos I received from Greg Horn in Washington state. This was his DelCraft SJ boat at the Sammamish Slough Boat & Ski Race. Photos with Ride Guide steering are 1971 and Keller cable steering are 1972.
Please credit Greg Horn for the photos.

Thanks for the memories. I skied in this race in '75 and '76 - both years behind friend's 454 jetboat. It was a crazy race. Started two boats at a time about a minute or two apart. I think the distance was something like 12 miles up stream and then 12 miles back after a short wait for the field to complete the upstream leg. I can remember being so tired I could hardly hold on. I guess liability concerns put an end to the fun.

WOW! That's cool. I had not seen any pics from the race after about 1960.

Someone at Powerboat Magazine took a pic of those two boats rounding a turn in that race. (The tunnel and the V hull with the old V-4 Evinrude. There is a sequence of pics showing an old kneeler runabout smashing the aft quarter of the hull into one of the bridge pillars and and flipping over. Wild race, must have been loads of fun.

Looks like the steering bar is bent. Nice Miles Master Racing Boats tee shirt too.

Cool boat! But I think those steering bars were suppose to be bent up. Needed to come up to be at the tilt tube center line.

As owner/driver of the V bottom in the picture, I can tell you for sure that was the most fun I ever had in a race boat! We were 2 US that year in UI. The hull was a 14' Checkmate (very light) and the engine an Evinrude X-115, which had lots of torque (14:23 gears and a 23" pitch wheel). Net result, not real fast on the top end and wouldn't turn worth a darn, but boy would it accelerate!!! And as every boat racer knows, if you can get to the first turn first, you're half way to the win.

It looks like the race may be making a comeback. an exhibition (sans skiers) is scheduled for tomorrow.
