Evinrude 250 HO
Thinking of getting an Evinrude 250 HO for my 1990 Team Shadow boat. But I'm looking at MSRP for the 250 HO vs the 300 and it's not much difference, maybe $700.
Looking for advice, why shouldn't I just go for the 300?
Also the HOs can't be programmed for 100:1 ratio but the 300 can.

I would not run one at 100 to 1.

power is the same on both of them only difference is the stickers now i think, L2 case is gone, they both come with magnum sle case. you will probably will want to run it on the tcw-3 oil rate anyway, guessing it will be on a high performance boat?

The folks with the "Knowledge" are here, they just have not responded yet....Id go 250 HO in White, and depending on what hull your putting it on you may want to have one of the LWP pros mod the gear case, or sell the M2 and get a OMC lower that is modded, thats what the guys here have done....it depends on your needs....Post what hull and what you want it to do, also you can typically find a NEW 2008 to present 250 HO in a box at a dealer and get a hell of a deal, maybe find a unit with the Lightning bullet style lower unit......

Color makes a difference? Because it ma be cooler on hot days??
I called Evinrude and asked why the changed the lower and they said it was limiting what type of prop you could use?????
The boat is a 1990 Team Shadow, similar to a Challenger or Superboat, not sure of the weight but I would say heavy for it's size, the whole boat is pretty thick. It has a CMC hydraulic jack plate
With a 1995 Evinrude 225 HP, top speed was 61 after trying a few different props.

you will probably be in the 75 mph and up range with a 300, thats when you start needing a L2 or just put a bobs cone on the magnum if you want.Try to get the .54 gear ratio its closer to what your running right now than the .58 ratio cases (hold on to those extra props you have!)

The SLE unit is more durable especially on heavy boats running positive trim it also has better cooling flow. I like the Lightning on smaller light boats but have run an untouched SLE over 90. IMO I would not expect to see more than single didgit speed gains but it will accelerate much better.
