Progress report and some photo's. The K Planes arrived. Nice planes but unfortunately they are the wrong ones, way too long. Took the boat into the local outboard mechanic. I wanted the engine run up and a compression test done. It appears we have an electrical problem with the V8, probably power pack, intermittent spark and could not start. However we did a compression check, came in at 100, 110, 95, 105, 100, 92, 95, 90 so not good. I will now remove the engine and not worry about it till it is getting close to needing it. I may look to go to electronic ignition.

Photo's show the seat bracing off the inner longitudinals. Still need to do the same on the outer longitudinals. I have found that the storage behind the seat is wide enough to fit fishing rods so the plan now is to make the storage as deep as possible. This will be constructed in conjunction with the rear seat.

No problem at all...With all of your hard work on the boat, I thought that a second set of eyes looking for parts might be helpful.... The boat is looking good!

I bet you lot all thought I had gone to sleep. No such luck, things have been happening. First the wrong K Planes arrived. Second I have just sold the Indmar Vortec engine and Alpha 1 drive. Got good money for it so that will boost the rebuild fund. As the one owner, one boat 300hp V8 I purchased is very definately not as described I have been considering my options on sorting it. I have a guy not too far from here who is ex OMC NZ Claims manager/mechanic or some such who seems to know his stuff with the V8's. I spoke with "racer" and looked at US options but finally decided to go with a full rebuild including rebore and new pistons etc etc. $7kNZ so it better be good. I am also looking at maybe going to electronic ignition.

To the boat now. On either side of the transom on the inside I have glued another section of 3/4 inch ply and three layers of double bias E glass. This is to give me a more substantial section of transom to support both the K Planes and the two towing eyes located near the top of the transom. I have also constructed a bilge pump outlet from some 30mm thin wall carbon fibre tube which will go through the transom and into the pod where it has a 45 degree bend and will exit the side of the pod. Once this is finished I can look to gluing the boarding platform on.

    More to come soon.

I was wondering how you were progressing. Sounds good and I'm glad that your still on it! That's a cool idea of running the bilge pump outlet through the pod. Looking forward to more pics of your progress.

Not been finding time to get much done on the boat. The engine is progressing but the mechanic couldn't remove the balancer from the crank (rusted on) so rather than not replace one of the seals I have opted to dismantle my parts engine and use that crank. Turns out the parts engine is a 3.6 not 4.0 but I have been told that the crancks will interchange. Have started to strip the parts engine but it is slow going, it is a long time since I have been on the spanners.

Between that and work (need to keep the money coming in so I have money to go out on the project) things have been embarrassingly slow on the project.
I am sure there will be a progress report in the not too distant future.

That is a vital part to any project. Slow progress is better than no progress.

You are so right. It is coming along. My mechanic phoned yesterday, mid, engine/transom bracket/trim-tilt rams etc are all ready to be taken to the painters. I have designed some rather trick rigging/cable brackets which I will take to my Stainless guy tomorrow. I am sure these will be real nice so I will have him make some extras, these are specially built for OMC and slide in as did the originals.

I have completed the water tank bracketing and have rigged the tank with fittings needed for connection to the water pump.

I have started bogging the inside of the transom/up under the rear deck area, some areas were a little rough from original build so will tidy all this up as I go.

I have to shift the boat out of the shed soon so will have a clean up and take some photo's.

I'm also really looking forward to the engines completion. Although I have ended up spending plenty on it, it is a nice feeling that we have really gone through it and the engine will end up as good as it can possibly be. My mechanic has located at reasonable money a late model bracket/trim-tilt assembly. Real tidy and stronger. Also the trim and tilt will operate far quicker than the old gear. I have decided to paint it in the old Evinrude dark blue metallic. Should look real nice........

I'm glad to hear about your progress. I restored a boat for a friend of mine a couple of years ago and painted his Evinrude with nearly original colors. My computer took a dump and I lost the best pics, but I'll post one for you anyway.
