    Hey Vegas,
it would be great to know setback, engine mid length and a photo at both speed and rest. I managed to find four photo's of your friends boat when it was for sale recently. The guy that purchased it off your friend didn't keep it long. My conversion is coming along, just busy building a shed at home for it. Any information your friend could share with you would be most welcome.

    Thanks,

    SJ.

My apologies for allowing this thread to go quiet. To get more work done on the boat I bought it home. Then we had such stink weather for our summer that work on the boat could not proceed and it sat under covers. So as I was going to build a shed for the boat anyway I got stuck in and put a roof over its head. The shed is nearing completion so its back to the project. Watch this space.

Hey Hemi, I got to say it is great to be back on it.

I have cut the longitudinal bearers to length, cut the bottom of the bearers and put on the base for the pod. Just about completed the "transom" on the rear of the pod. This will be three inches thick (4 laminates of 18mm Meranti ply) with 6 layers of 600grm Double Bias E
glass at either end. As soon as it is finished I will post some more photo's.
Final setback measurement is 20 inches.

God it sure is good to be back on task.

Well things have been progressing. Found some time last week and this weekend and have made some serious progress. Also I have taken some photo's. Given this is only the second time I have set up an outboard and previous time was nearly 40 years ago, I have been moving forward slowly and carefully, I hate having to do a job twice, do it once and do it right.
Construction of the pod is complete less finishing and painting. When looking down on the cockpit you can see that there are two outer longitudinals which we had to cut when we rebuilt the transom. Still to be done is repair the cut longitudinals. This repair will include longer sections which will be extended out through slots which will be cut in the transom. These will be used to further support the boarding platform and will be constructed from 3/4 inch Maranti ply glassed over.

Today I trial fitted the jack plate and the engine. I have not been able to source the correct grade of Stainless Steel bolts here in NZ so currently using 316 Stainless Steel. I will order the correct grade of bolts from the US this week. It was great to see the engine all fitted up, a great step forward.

The plan is to now remove the jack plate with engine attached. I will over drill the holes in the "transom" on the pod and seal them with epoxy resin. I will then re-mount the engine/jackplate combination and rebolt. As soon as I am able we will take the boat to the lake and float it. I wish to check that the pod doesn't have too much bouyancy, confirm the boarding platform will have the correct amount of fall and I will use the opportunity to run up the engine. This will give me an indication on it's condition and how much work may or may not be required on it. I have a test prop so will be able to give is some revs while under load.

So checkout the photo's, any questions or comments welcomed.

Yeah mate, want to know how it floats so I can move on. Weather this weekend is crap so I suppose it will have to be next weekend. Not to worry still plenty to carry on with. I have removed the engine/jackplate and sanded the pod. In order to float the boat I will need to make sure everything is well sealed against the water, so it will get a good coat of epoxy resin. Now that the pod has been sanded, the next job was to install tubes in the bolt holes. This is done for two reasons. One is to make sure that there is no possibility of water entering the pod transom laminates via the Jack Plate bolt holes and also it will help stop any possibility of transom crush when the bolts are snugged up tight though in this layup that is highly unlikely. I had some Carbon tube on hand which matched the required dimensions.

The plan is Saturday I will resin the pod and Sunday remount the engine/jackplate.
    Here's a couple of photo's.

From what I can see that's some pretty nice work. That pod is going to look factory when you get it done.

that looks nice and in my mind i feel the lift being transfered into the boat weird, huh. i havent talked to the guy that built that twin nova 23 in a while but i beleive they were 25 shafts and i would have to ask him about if he remembers the height. he had 19 viper props and i got him a set of 22 rakers and he really liked them. i dont remember specific's of rpm but i think he hit 65 with no setup. just put on the rakers. i really apreciate your work ethic looking at the job its nice work there... i'd be proud of myself....

With the method I have used to support to pod and engine I will guarantee I will have no stress cracks. Also my method should work out lighter than more traditional transom strengthening methods.

On your friends boat I had suspected the twins were 25in mids. That will be why he was running only 22in pitch props, I will be changing to one 25 inch mid but if I were to go to twins it would need to be 20 inch mids.

Thankyou for your comments on the quality of my work.
