    85 starflite power

so i`m building my starflite and starting to give some thought about the motor. 3 litre or 2.5. would like some thought on pluses of each side. biggest plus with 3 litre is 300+ dependable hp, but costly. my buddy has dozens of 2.5 motors and parts, but how much dependable hp can be pulled from a 2.5? thanks Donnie

The heavier boats like the 3.0 liters for the torque they put out. You can build a 2.5 fishing motor up to about 240 hp. With the correct setup on your Starflite and a 3.0 liter Merc 225 you will see speeds into the mid-upper 70's all day long. You will need 12" of setback to get you there. Beef up the transom knees and make sure they are bonded to the stringers, transom and topdeck. Use transom savers on the inside of the transom and splashwell to help distribute the weight of the motor with setback. A Trophy Plus 26 should do the trick..

ditto to Jupiter's post. The 3 L is the ticket on the heavier boats, especially if you load them up every now and then with people, coolers and gas....
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.
