    300xs blow up

Need some advice! Ran my new used 2006 for the first time this weekend. Alarms everywhere - low starboard oil, ignition failure, still in breakin mode (with 92 hours on engine!). I think I got the oil issue resolved - topped up the engine mount tank by removing the bleeder valve at the top. But, then after a good 2 hours of running, she started smoking bad - electrical smell. She shut right down and I haven't tried to restart it. I'm sure it's coils , maybe I even toasted the damn ECM. So, do I replace all coils? Will merc cover this out of warranty? I've read elsewhere that the problem is so common that they might / have done this? Why would the mercmonitir be saying the engine is still in break in and will be controlled by the ECM?? Seeing smoke billowing from the engine is not conducive to happy boating! Thanks

Some people think they can winterize a opti by pumping the throttle, it does run the oil pump but also puts it back into break in mode. I have seen the coils take out the ecu, it's worth a try with Mercury.

So, to close this thread - turns out the new ignition key/switch that was installed as part of my rigging was faulty - the key would stick in the crank position, causing the starter to remain engaged to the flywheel. We weht through TWO new starters from Merc before it got resolved. Gotta hand it to Merc, they covered the cost and labour for the install and then toasting of two new starters! Thanks Merc!

Well thats a turn up for you. I am very surprised merc covered the new starters but maybe there is more to this story.... Glad it turned out to be relatively minor and you can still get some boating in before winter????
A starter motor staying engaged is not that uncommon and on our diesel powered sport fishers it often causes the boat to catch on fire.
