Mercury Lower Unit Tools
What tools are needed to disassemble a Mercury Sportmaster Lower Unit and where can I get them?

The only things you need to disassemble it are the spanner for the ring nut that holds the bearing carrier, the spanner socket for the ring nut that is under the water pump and the spanner socket for the shift shaft bushing. It's nice to have the spline nut to hold the drive shaft when removing the pinion nut. There are a bunch of tools required to set the gears up correctly. All available from Mercury dealers and some from aftermarket but the first tool I recomend is the factory manual. It has all the tools part numbers and how they are used.

you need gearcase cover nut tool which is the carrier nut tool to get started , depending on how stuck the carrier is you may have to have the slidehammer to get it out BE sure you have the right jaws if they are too long they will scar up the threads badly, then you will need the shift shaft tool to remove it so the propshaft can come out , then you will need the bearing retainer nut removal tool to get the round threaded nut off the drive shaft then you will need a 7/8 socket on a break over to hold the pinion nut while you turn the drive shaft with the drive shaft holder tool i use an impact on this because it torqued to 75/85 lbs or supposed to be. that will get you stripped
