    Exclamation Broken sportmaster drive shaft....HELP

I have a 3.0 liter sporty with a broken drive shaft right above the pinion gear. How in the heck do you get the pinion nut off so I can get the prop shaft out?????

You should be able to wedge something between the pinion and fwd gear teeth. I would use a piece of hard plastic like nylon or delren.

It is broken right at the pinion.....
I would be welding the bolt inside the gearcase. I'm not real comfortable with that either....what about the heat? One idea I had was to split the pinion nut with an air chisel on each side. I'm not sold with that either...
There used to be a guy on this board that I think worked for Mercury. He may have lived in Florida but I can't remember. He was the goto guy with Sporty's and had a really quick turn arround time. Maybe Greg can remember whom he was........I'm stuck I now that for sure

Here's a thought, can you take the spring off clutch dog and slide pin out and move it so it has room to come down. How much driveshaft is left on it?

its almost impossible to cut the nut with an air chisel i tried that more then once due to the recess of the pinion you can cut some of it but its dangerous because your working so close to the oring sealing surface for the carrier if you knock a chip out of that its over no more good seal there been to that dance also

Texas the pinion had to come out in order for the prop shaft to be removed. After closer inspection the drive shaft broke about an inch down inside the pinion. After that the pinion nut welded itself to the broken part of the driveshaft by rubbing against the clutch dog. I don't think I could have ever removed the nut. A friend of mine helped me and I finally got the pinion out. I appreciate everyones comeback on this one. Thats what this board is all about.
