    Auto paint over gel coat

I'm new to the fiberglass boat thing I'm about to go buy a vector that needs some touch up on the top of the bow and dashboard and the whole top deck needs to be clear coated. Could I just use regular car paint and clear coat? FYI the paint job is factory if that helps.
One more thing I don't know weather to paint the inside floor or go with carpet or paint over the fiber glass what are the pros and cons?
Eany ones wisdom would be very helpful.

post some pics, lets see what kind of shape the flake is in

To answer your question, yes Automotive clear can be used
I have sprayed Imron, PPG and awlgrip

if you dont have a booth, try to get something that is buffable
    and fast drying

Do I have to clear it or can I just buff it out

Anywhere that you are down to the fiberglass you need to use an epoxy primer or the paint won't stick. But any good quality automotive clear should work. It's all about the prep.

spraying clear over faded gelcoat will not hold up, it will not hold its gloss.
if you keep it out of the sun, under a cover it will hold up for a little bit, but out in the sun it wont last a single season.

if you just have a small area that has a break through and you want to touch it up what you need to consider is that when you go to prep , spray, and polish that area out the surrounding area may also fail

I've sanded with 1500, cleaned the surface really well, Sprayed an adhesion promoter (flex agent) actually mixed in the clear. Apply 3- 5 coats if you intend to color sand and buff. There are alot of veriables to know just how long it will last.

ok so if i go with clear coat then i will probly have to redoo the clear in a year or too.

or i can spray the primer over the bare fiberglass areas sand or wet sand? with 1000 or 1500? then spray the white gell coat sand or wet sand the gell coat with 1000 or 1500?
then i should just have to buff the whole top deck with some sort of compound and it should shine.

i think im going in the right direction but prob not haha

If your just fixing the dash, just do your body work to get it flat, mask off around that area, use an epoxy primer, then spray a white base coat , unmask the rest of the boat, then clear all of it in together. As long as the rest of the top cap is already sanded and cleaned/wax free.

1500 grit no good for adhesion, most clears you can sand with 400-600 grit, you need to check the clear you are using. You dont want it TOO fine

I used a clear over the winter that specified 400 grit, I usually dont go courser then 600 grit
also depends on the paper being used, hand sand or DA

I would use a red scotch brite pad to scuff it up, them wipe the whole boat down with reducer a few times. Put your clear on thick cuz your gonna get fish eyes regardless of what you do. Then you will have to wet sand ( block it) with with nothing coarser then 500 grit and work your way up to 1000 grit. Then re clear it with four coats of clear. Once thats done you will have to wet sand with 1000, then 1500, then 2000, then you can buff it out. You got alot of work ahead of you if you want it to come out like glass.
