    300x Engine Power Limited

I have an intermittent problem on my 2002 300x and would like your technical advise to enlighten me on this matter.

Problem is occurring in 2 different situations:

    1. At WOT engine only turns 5000 rpm, you can feel that the power is limited but nothing is recorded on smart craft.

    2. At WOT engine turns 6200rpm (seems to be OK), but suddenly smart craft displays "engine power limited" and sounds a continuous beep, guardian kicks in and the outboard idles. If you put the engine to neutral, then into gear to try to continue, the same things happens after 30 secs.

Please note that the temperature is 118-120F, water pressure is ok, I'm not going into the rev limiter and the oil reservoir is full. Strangely enough, during testing I managed to simulate 1 and 2 (above) and as well get the full power out of the engine, all during the same day within 30 mins. Problem 2 is happening more frequently, but again, I might go out again and it works fine with full power for another 20min or so.

Do you have any idea what this could be, is it worth trying a new MAP or TPI sensor or they have nothing to do with this?

    Your help is much appreciated!
    Thanks!

If you have a DDT, scan the motor and write down everything. Then clear the fault history and fault codes and go run it until it acts up and see what came back on the DDT. Anything that throws an alarm will leave a code.

    Consult th Merc tech manual

Mercules is correct. if you check the Fault seconds on your DDT you should see the parameter that is exceeded. Only certain parameters will result in a engine gaurdian condition (don't remember). Check the manual. You can also see TPI, Map, Temp ...while running the engine with the data monitor and see the actual operating ranges in the Eng specs menu. By the sound of things you probably have a fault (in lieu of a bad ECU)because some faults will allow the engine to contiue for a short period then gaurdian kicks in. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks to all for your instant replies!

Manual says continuous beep could be:

    1. over heat
    2. over speed
    3. over heat cylinder head
    4. throttle sensor failure (continuous intermittent beep)

On the System View SC5000 the alert history recorded "over speed" but this is impossible since I'm only turning about 6000. I will also try the DDT as Mercules recommended to look for other faults.

    Any ideas please!!?
Are these values normal, block psi, fpc total and freq counter?

I had similar problems with my 300x and had dealerships use their ddt to find nothing. Watch your water pressure(closely) and see what it reads exactly the time it goes into guardian mode. If it drops below 4.5 psi on the smartcraft, it will shut down. Try lowering the motor 1/4 inch or so and see if problem is still there.

T-Bone so is the block psi related to the ecu limiting power?

I've just went boating and noticed that the block psi is constantly 1 to 2, which is below the acceptable level. Water flow is fine and the engine is not overheating. Still at around 4500 revs the guardian is kicking in with a continuous beep and 2 alerts - engine power limited and overspeed.

I've also changed the TPI and MAP sensors just in case, although I can now confirm they aren't the issue! Next in line is the block psi sensor but I would like to confirm if low pressure is related to the guardian limiting revs (overspeed). This is not explained in the manual.

    thanks

This may or may not help, but I've just had Over Temp issues as well on my 2001 300x. DDT said "OVER TEMP STARB SIDE", I checked everything and it looked good, did an Ohm reading on the sensor and it checked good based on ambient temperature at time of check. I swapped the sensors between port & starb and the fault went with the swap, it moved to the port side. Replaced that sensor, problem fixed.............Good Luck.

hello again, just wanted to let you know that the problem was solved by replacing the block psi sensor. Without a min of 5 psi block pressure the guardian limits power and sounds a continuous beep. This has solved my issue.

    thanks to all!
