    12JE Question - Thrust Bearing

I am putting a '75 Glastron back together. The motor is out. I pulled the cap off the thrust bearing and it does not look bad but it seems like a good idea to replace the bearing while I can get to it easily....before putting the motor back in.

I see that snap ring there holding the thrust bearing in place. Do I simply need to remove that ring and replace the thrust bearing (will it just pull out???) or it it more complicated than that? Do I have to pull the bowl on the jet to get the thrust bearing off?

Are there any step-by-step instructions available for working on Berkley pumps? Where's a good place to purchase parts?

You will have to take the bowl off. Then you will need a 1 13/16 very deep socket to get the impeller nut off. After that probably a special impeller puller or a three jaw puller to get the impeller off. Once the bowl and impeller are off, loosen the two packing land split ring adjuster nuts and drive the shaft towards the front with a rubber mallot. This is necessary as the Thrust bearing is pressed on to the shaft. Any machine shop should be able to press your old bearing off and the new one on. Also, while you are this far into the pump, you should make sure wear ring clearances are right and you should also add to or replace the rope packing seals on the shaft.

ahhh....got it. that all makes sense now. Thank you!

are there sources available that show how to measure the wear ring clearances and what those clearances should be?

This should help. The side clearance between the wear ring and the wear ring surface of the impeller shoulf also be .025" total. (.0125" per side).
