There were some races limited to 90 cubic inches at the time, that's the only reason the 1000BP was made ... also the OMC race motors were 89ci ... making the 1000BP and Super BP put the Mercs head to head with the OMC race motors with no whining that the Mercs were bigger and put Mercs in the restricted races starting in 1968.

By 1970 the races were either not restricted to 90 cubic inches or were considered second rate races. Merc was not really interested in racing in other than the top class. For example, OMC dominated OE for a long time before Merc showed any real interest in OE and even that was just a brief flash in the pan before they dropped back and let OMC have OE.

Since factory race motors are almost always used as a showcase for similar current production motors, my guess would be that an 89 ci OI Twister would not be a factory built motor ... 1969 was the last year of the 89ci Merc ... but anything is possible.

    BP Driveshaft

A while back, Willabee posted about some 'treasures' he found in the bottom of his tool box. I found a few in my tool box the other day. An unopened can of 'Formula 50 Oil; a new Champion
L-19V spark plug, still in the cellophane wrapper; two 'inline' ring compressors (you really need three); and this---a seal removing too I made out of a discarded [B]BP driveshaft---

Did the BPs have an issue with pinion spline, as it was a small thin multi style. Other racing cases had a 6 spline or bigger. ????? If we start drinking sooner can we mis-spell???? Also did the Stackers have a habit of dropping cones.......

Dave---it is a cool rainy day in the mountains---so it is OK to start drinking earlier???
Never had an issue with the pinion spline, the problems usually started with a failure of the special needle bearings on the pinion end, of the 3 driveshafts.

The 4 springs on the stacker megaphones cured the megaphone problem---

What is the story on old 1250 with "100 cu in six" on lower panel and red and white stipes above the ventilation plate on non BP lower? Any significance , or just creative decorating.

Yes there are parts diagrams in general circulation and good cutaway views on the Frankenstein Speedmaster thread

To my knowledge, there was no manual on them. Steckbauer would know

The powerhead parts lists use the same pictures as the fishing motor.

You can compare the part numbers on a bunch of websites like Doug Russell:
