Roy Roger's Power Cat
Roy Roger's personal 1961 Power Cat is one of the items in the Burley Auction being held in New Braunfels
Texas next Saturday. The boat had been in the Branston Mo museum for years, and Roy's grandson pulled
it out of storage and had the motors gone thru and the whole Roger's family took it out several times last
year. Since it is part of the estate it now goes up for auction.

Just got back from the auction. There were 4 very active bidders with the starting bids at $5k.. when it went past $15k two bidders fell to the side,
and the remaining two kept at it till the final bid went unanswered at $23,000.00

Fujimo:
I got to thinking about the price level this boat went for...
Since it's what we would call a "survivor" and has not been
restored, it is in basically original condition. Most of us
would consider this a pretty high price to pay for a boat of this age.
But say you walk in to your local marine dealer and tell them
you want to buy a 16ft ski boat, with twin 70 hp motors, that
will pull 4-6 skiers, seat 6 people, and be safe and comfortable
for use on large lakes, and open bays, and be capable of speeds above 50mph.
I would bet that by the time he finds something like that ( if he could ) the price
tag would be well above $40k for boat motors and trailer, ready to use.
Now of course this is a used boat, but in real world
terms of what you can acutally do with either boat, there is
very little difference. This does not take into account the
"wow" factor many of the classic boats have, especially when
they are compared to many of the modern "hot tubs on a trailer"
styling of todays boats.

Very nice comparison,,,,,,,,,,, Question didn"t Roy Rogers have something to do with Yellow Jacket boats as well? You have to love the name across the bow (Trigger Too),,,,,,,,, He was the real King of the cowboys........

Yes, Roy had a part ownership of Yellow Jacket boats, and actualy raced for them
with single and twin engine rigs in the early 50's. He held the record for the Catalina
chanel race for several years with a Yellow Jacket. I got to meet his son Dusty ( Roy Jr.)
and Dustin his grandson at the auction. They certainly are carrying on the legacy of the
"Cowboy in the White Hat" as they are as nice as they come.

Friends of our family had this framed, autograghed picture in their cabin.
I use to think it was the coolest picture I'd ever seen.

Auction report
I went to the auction but thought someone out of classic boating would buy it for too much money. And they did. In my opinion the boat was nice with solid transom, floors and finish. It was missing the PowerCat logos on the sides which had been redone with odd stripes. The windshield was cracked top to bottom. The original tank was still under the seats but inop and replaced with 2- 6 gal plastic tanks under the splashwell. The big trim tab was inop and missing the hydraulic ram. If you like brown and tan seats and carpet you will like the interior. The right motor had a later gearcase and the left motors skeg was half gone. The bronze props were worn out. The motors paint finish was OK for the age. Trailer was vintage but good. Overall the rig was not a looker, I've seen better twins on the PowerCat site for $12.5K with bigger motors. If Roys name was worth $10K-15K you might get to the $23K hammer price plus 15% auction fee. Good luck to the buyer.

gemini:
The one thing I learned from that auction was, I am the wrong person to ask about
the value of this collector stuff. Not just the boat, but everything they sold while I was
there went for more than I would have ever thought it would. Of course at any auction
in order to win you have to be willing to pay more than everybody else which brings in to
question the winners intelligence to start with.
