    Tilt n tilt wiring 1977 johnson 140hp ?

Hello , a friend has just got hold of a 1977 johnson 140hp. what we need to know is where do the wires go that come out of the trim pump.
We have two sets of wires, 1 set has 3 wires, and the other has 2 wires.

any advice on this would be realy good as we can then use the trim and start getting the engine serviced.

The three wires are green, blue and I think black. Black to ground, green is down and blue is up. These functions have to be controlled by a relay.

I don't know what you mean about the two wires, unless you mean the trim gauge sending unit which is mounted on one of the clamp brackets.

The 77 mod yr used a boat mounted trim box that has a seloniod in it. The up circuit uses the seloniod, the down circuit is wired direct. You will need this box to make it work. Wiring dia is on the lid of the box. You may be able to make it work with relays but I am not sure how that would be wired.

Sorry I didn't mention this. You can move the trim up and down by connecting the wires as I mentioned, but for final proper installation the box with the solenoid is needed.

Keep in mind that your older motor is a 3 wire motor. So it uses the trim box that riverman mentioned. The later units (1981 and later) us a two wire trim motor. That takes a different control box.

Pm me with more info. I just rewired my tilt and trim and jackplate with new relays. I moved them all under the dash to keep them dry, they were under the cowling. If the pump motor has 2 wires and you connect them to a batt one way it goes up, if you reverse the wires it goes down???? If thats the case you need 2, 5 prong relays 30/40 amp heavy duty. The other 3 wires go to the switch. There's a diagram online, google "tilt/trim wiring diagram" Is shows how to wire them by the numbers. Its actually pretty easy.

I've wired up my old 3 wire with two Ford starter solenoids. Even though the factory unit uses only one relay/solenoid it puts less of a load on the trim switch if you use two.

Also Rapair/CDI use to make a relay box for two wire motors.
