Merc 225 opti questions
I have done alot of searching on here, was wondering what the best route would be for a replacement powerheard. 2001 225 opti, when I purchased the boat, i was told the powerhead was replaced, I did a compression check on it, all holes were good. I put about 75 hours on it this past summer, always ran the quicksilver DFI oil and quicksilver quickkleen. The engine always performed awesome, started right up no matter what, first click of the key. However the last run of the season, it fired up instantly, but it did loop for the first 15-20 seconds of run time, then never did it again. On the run home, it locked up, then restarted to get it to the ramp, did a comp. test on it, to find #6 at 0 psi. So dollar for dollar, what is the best way to go, I dont have alot of money to spend on this, but would really like the boat back together, any advice?

I would look around for a good used replacement motor. Something caused the 1st one to blow. And you will have to replace/repair the powerhead and find the cause of #6 blowing. Between repairs on an older motor (2001) and finding/fixing the cause of failure, it could get expensive. It might be a good time to get a newer motor and sell the 01 as a parts motor. I just got a nice 2006 opti for 4500. Get an estimate for repairs, look for a used engine, and see what will be the less expensive route. JM2cts....

What would the pros/cons of going to a 2000 EFI engine, I understand the efi uses more fuel and oil, that is about all I know.

Stick with 2003 or newer Optis if you can.

starboard powerhead says 2001 on the sticker, port is a 99, trying to understand what swaps can be done, found some 2000 250 efi's in my price range, optis seem to be very expensive and money is tight. would a used 03 or newer powerhead drop on? I was always worried about the port one going as it was original, and i was told the starboard one was just replaced. what should i look for in shopping for to get this boat back on the water? i am still new to the outboards! i have found some good info using the search, but it has not answered all my questions.

3.0 EFI mercs are very thirsty when compared to the optis. Especially the 250s. And yes, an 03 and newer opti powerhead should bolt onto any opti mid and tuner/lower
