Newbie Set Up Help. 1986 Lazer Sport - 70 hp Mariner
The Brief: 1986 Lazer Sport Runabout (Made 1985 - 1987 by Amstar/Camstar)
12' V-hull
1983 70hp Mariner - Stock 13 spline SS 15p Prop
Manual Jack Plate (Working on Hydraulic Jack Plate)
Weight: (Working on Actual) est. 1,000lbs (heavy I know)
The 83' 70hp Mariner (Called Mercury for this Info)
- WOT- 5,500-5,800
- 215 lbs w/t&t
- Gear Ratio – 1.83-1
- 20" Mid Section
- 12 Pole - 6 Pulse
- 60-63 HP @ the prop
This hull doesn't have a pad. It is a 20" transom. I set the motor height (Manual Jack Plates w/6" setback) with the Cav plate roughly 3-4" above the bottom and at 5,200 (best I remember) I am running 43 mph on gps. I raised the motor about 1- 1/2" and it lost mph, higher rpm's and would blow out in turns. I had it trimmed out mid-way if you will for optimum bow lift with out slipping or plowing. It was probably ventilating. I just raised the plates to their max highest as mounted putting the shaft roughly 3"-4" below the bottom to try and get the shaft even with the bottom as advised by a local Prop Man here in Dallas and am gonna get more data.
.
My Desire is to get the most out of what I have and I feel like there is more to be had but my limited experience and knowledge tells me I need your help
I will get an accurate weight as soon as this Snow & Ice goes away.
Any tips, thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

Do not get the Hydraulic Jack Plate. You don't need the weight. I think that the only thing that you can really do is try a few props, a 17p mabey more, something kinda high performance. You will need to keep the motor a little low to carry the rig. That is not a race boat or race motor, if you push that issue too far every thing else will suffer. Like cruzing, joy rideing ect... I see that it even has a trolling motor.

Thanks for the reply Mr. Johnson. I've been lurking on here for about a year and have finaly got some time to post up some pics and ask a question. I got to say of all the sites/forums I've looked on the folks on this forum are some class acts.
I kinda figured that was about all I could do or find a Yamaha 90. I have 2 Batteries aft under the cooler (130lbs) that I've been thinking of relocating in the center against the foot board. It sets reasonably high in the water so I think an extra 40lbs on the 90hp would be fine and get me in the 50-60mph.
Yeah, I quickly modded up a mount on the bow for the TM. It's functional but not pretty. I am having a bow cover made so it'll retain the original appearance. It had 2 swim platforms Aft that were rotted and I never fixed or put back on. I have plans for tandom static mounted tm's controlled by a PWM controller off a wheel chair.... we'll see. Concerned about the weight back there.
With my narrow tail and my 300+ brother-n-law we squeezed out 42mph and fished it 2 days straight and he said he liked it just fine.

That almost looks like a GW Invader that someone modified. If it is 10'4" it probably is a GW Invader. I can't remember where the hull # is but on modern boats it is on the outside of the Transom. There may also be a Coast Guard plate somewhere inside that gives max HP, persons, and weight. GW Invaders were rated for 2 people (don't know the weight) and 55 HP.

Not a real 700X , just a 1982 70 hp powerhead w/ some mild mods. I wanted the decal color to match the boat lol

yeah I can see that its not a 700x, but the decals look very nice on the motor.
nice paintwork on engine too, looks real nice.real nice restoration job too, how thick is that transom now ?
when you find a prop that is a touch too big, just vent it for the holeshot .
once your motor gets spinning it will be fine, just do make sure its in the highest part of the rpm range at full throttle so not labouring the engine too much.
these motors dont like to be bogged down.
I had the early 1970's 3 cylinder 650xs and a normal 1973 65hp short shaft and the 1991 60hp models, all very good motors, not as fast a johnson or evinrude , but way better on fuel consumption. and so much easier to find props to play around with than a omc.
