    Sporty leaking oil. Advice

It dont leak alot but there always seems to be some oil leaking out around the prop shaft. I have ran it and it never gets water in the gearcase but, tends to leak about 5-10 drops out after I park it. I always let a ounce or 2 run out of it to make sure it aint over full when changing the gearcase oil. I am thinking the sealing area on the shaft is corroded and thats why its leaking. Crossing my fingers that the seals are just bad. I had it rebuilt 2 years ago and the drive shaft had to be replaced because of the corroded sealing area. I am thinking about replacing the seals and seein if that works. I have replaced these in the past on a stanard fishing motor and they are a real pain in the ass to get out without scarring up the prop shaft sealing area. My real question is. What do yall use to remove the 2 prop shaft seals?
    Thanks

Don't risk the prop-shaft, pull the carrier and knock out the seals.

Just an FYI...........Don't know if I'm the lucky guy or not, but I've never had to pull anything to get them out. A long sheet metal screw or dry wall screw and a good yank, out they came. On the reinstall I clean out the bore w/brake cleaner on a Q-Tip and use Loctite 242 (BLUE) applied with a Q-Tip in the bore prior to seal install. Never had any issues of them coming out.

That's a pretty good idea Gary. I might suggest Loctite 609 (green) however as it is a retaining compound as opposed to a threadlocker.

    Rock,
The 642 Threadlocker is just enough to hold the seal from getting loose, I still have a good press fit and I only use it for a little added insurance and removal can be done without any damage to surrounding surfaces.........If I had a slip or looser fit I'd agree with you on using 609.

If the shaft is pitted badly and thats causing your seal issues. Get a SS collar made up and sweat it over the propshaft. Put new seals in and you shouldnt have the issue again.

I am certainly not a Loctite expert. I just read the bottles. Is the 609 a lot tougher than the 642?

The green Locktite is a stud and bearing mount anerobic compound and is tough as nails. Most of the bearings and gears mounted with the Green need 700* of heat to remove them.

Does the small shaft sporty use the same seals as a standard small shaft v6 gearcase?
    Thanks.

No need to make, already sold...great for corroded trailer axles too. Click the link...its the ticket, but doing one a prop shaft, with out a lip the shaft, might be prob. Just a thought..

The Sportmaster has a different propshaft than the standard 200 case
