With the strainer out flushing water through the flush attachment forces water out the hole where the strainer goes and back flushes down the water tube and the pee hole.

I did not say remove the whole fitting! Just cut the screen off the fitting!!! The screen is not a check valve lol.

Hey Rude Runner. I was merely describing the water flow when you flush using the adapter. I had pulled out the strainer looking for a peice of gasket that had broken off the water pump. I pulled the screen out which had some debris but when I ran the hose through the adaptor with the screen out a lot of debris shot out along with the broken off piece of gasket. I think that screen should stay in to prevent crap from moving further up the stream.

Great info, Does mercury recommend this procedure or is this just something that comes about from a failure? Is there a diagram out there that shows cooling water flow? Is it in a service manual?

Mr D. I see in your first post you have a picture of the service manual. Can you post a picture of the cooling water diagram?

a 1/4" drive 8mm swivel socket and long extension makes removing the side pans easier...... also, a ty-wrap tool will tighten the ty-wrap without putting too much stress on the plastic fitting and can be used on all ty-wraps.....
