    84 Shadow Rrestoration Build Thread

1984 Team Shadow Restoration, i have been asked by a few to make a thread with some updates of the progress as i go along so here it is. Boat as it currently sits is completely gutted and ready for grinding. Boat will have new transom, stringer/knees, bulkheads, fueltank, complete rerig and a fresh paint job! Going to be my winter project, hopefully it doesnt turn into a late spring early summer project, i wanna be on the water by memorial day lol the hull bottom is balsa cored and the rest of the hullsides and top deck are all foam cored, it is to my understanding that all earlier Image built shadows are completely balsa cored, so im hoping to build this boat pretty light. laying in a small floor pan in the cockpit and running longer stringers and some bulkheads up front to delete the forward and rear floor sections.

Nice rotted out balsa stringers, thanks to the tank deckplate not being sealed

Plan on doing the transom from the inside with 3 layers of 3/4 plywood and replacing the stringers with plywood also. i will be building some big knees and using the tie bar setup that was in the boat. This is a full transom boat so the rear hatch that is mangled will be getting either fixed or replaced and will be doing some work on the blue section of the deck. the blue gelcoat is full of crazing marks so it gonna have to be ground off and either faired, or maybe durateched. ill tackle that nightmare when i get there.

looks like that was once a i/o boat by the way the hatch opening looks. great boats, i sold mine to cut water after a toal go over and fresh paint, basicly all new. good luck.

this was originally built to be an i/o boat i believe. there was never a hole cut in the transom and it was rigged with an outboard. the boat had a 26 inch stainless marine bracket on it when i bought it with a 2.4 merc. i like the full transom better than the outboard/splashell version, one of the main reason i ended up buying this one. I liked your boat, and i saw it upstate this summer when kent brought it to lake sacandaga. boat looked really nice!

I always like the lines of the Shadows. Looks like it will be a nice ride when done. I also like the closed transom...gives you a nice flat sun lounge!!

got about 90% of the boat ground out today, was hoping to get it all done in one shot but i snapped two backing plates for my angle grinder and it was getting late so after 7 hours on nonstop grinding i called it quits. Just need to finish grinding the transom and a few small spots on the sides. After cleaning all the dirt off the glass i was finally able to see the core and everything so far appears to be good!

lol dont be making me paranoid now. there is once section of coring above the pad in the back that i am going to inspect, holes for a bilge pump have been drilled and it doesnt seem like there was any sealant present so im gonna remove the glass and see if that section of coring is wet(im sure it probably is unfortunately) should be easily repairable though. gonna finish grinding this weekend and get a tent up over the boat soon so when the semester ends i can really get my ass in gear and get this project on its way. Purposely tried to lighten my class load for the spring semester to so i will have more time to work on this thing. im getting excited and antsy, cant wait to get started on putting it back together! i can effortlessly lift the hull off the blocks, so im shooting for mid to high 70's with my 225 3.0

If the boats going to sit outside during the rebuild, I would roll out a coat of resin as precaution to seal the glass above the core...plus it'll make the core shine!!
