    help

ok so last week i posted a thread about carbon problems...thurs. night i did a comp. test to see what is going on and all were at 110 except #2 at 90 and #4 at 50... took head off to see if gasket was busted did not find anything that looked like it would leak, checked pistons, rings, cylinder walls, and all looks great...rings apear to be there and complete squirted wd 40 down there and it just puddled not running past piston or rings...put back together hoping it was just the gasket and had same #'s....i ran it with my diag program performed cylinder drop test and all checked out fine...took to lake and starts and runs perfect like since the day i had it...could it be reed valves???

    motor is a 99 evinrude 225 (ficht)

ps the rattle i was describing in the thread last week was a bolt that had backed out and was just riding in the lower cowling...

    thanks for any help

Sorry I don,t get your point, What is it your asking? If the comp. test was done correctly, then you have 2 bad cylinders thanks

You could have a ring that is stuck in the piston ring groove. I have also seen FICHTs running with cracked piston rings. They somehow did not catch in the ports but the ring was not doing it's job and the compression was low....

Yes, and no. A bad reed (hanging open or broken) will not lower compression, BUT, if a reed breaks, and is ingested by the engine, it can cause damage that can reduce compression.

Sure, the broken pieces could be injested by any cylinder. Usually, with the heads off, there is evidence though, like cylinder scratching, or other signs of reed material that went through.

Sounds like you may have gotten the engine hot and the piston rings lost thir tension or you had a stuck ring before and they freed up.. If the compression is more than 15-20% off from the rest you need to pull the engine down as it's not going to get better and it will show you the problem sooner or later with a catrostophic failure..
