Mercury Promax
What to look out for when buying a mercury promax 2.5 225. What are all the different things i should look for?

The same things one should look for on any used motor. Compression readings, Leakdown%, What if anything has/was done to the motor, Oil injection removed etc. Salt water use?? Maintanence?

Some of the 20 inch motors had recalls too. Maybe someone will chime in on what they were,, I think one was an ecu issue.

The recall was for the A12 (recalibration) on the 1996/1997 Pro Max which was supercede by the A17.

IMPO, If it has been rebuilt make sure it has top pinned pistons, steel cage bearings, proper rings for steel bore block, A32 the newer ECU and the oil system removed like mentioned above. If not plan on doing it.

what should the compression be at?

Bone stock 125. If the engine is good. Anything under 105/110 look at a refresh. But you need to do a leakdown also as previousely mentioned.
