    Surface drive for a hydroplane

    Hi to all,
I'm new to here but not to the water. I've lived most of my life (not dead yet)on the same lake and have had all sorts of power boats from a Mengees special 12, a number of 3 point hydros, and my favorate that is now long gone, a 15 ft GW invader tunnel hull with a 150 xs Merc.
I am thinking of building a surface drive simuler to one I saw on Utube that used a Hayabusa bike engine in a 20+ ft boat for off shore use.
Other than the fact that the drive would need to be custom built which wouldn't be too much trouble, after all I built cars from scratch, what would a good length boat be? I was thinking of the 11 ft range with a drive shaft type motorcyle engine behind the drivers seat.
    Comments? Advice?

Damn!,,,,, I was in Fla. last week (truck driver) Anyway,,,,I was more towards the shaft bike of lesser HP ( Hyabusa's aren't cheap) I was more towards a go kart-indy car comparision. The boat would be for fun and not racing. I had a 11 footer a long way back and thought it was the right length for the 50 I hung on the back. I was just wondering if the length and mild (80-100) HP would be doable?

Yes that is the engine,,,,,,but I'm old and CHEAP!!!!!!!!!! I was looking to use an older 4 cly bike engine that runs a drive shaft. If you search Utube for Offshore hyabusa boat, you may find the one I was refering to.

yea ok i seen that a few years back but never got to see it run yet
from what i see you need to leave the gear box on it so you can get the prop rpms up more
still i think 11 ft is to small more like 15/17 these bike motors IMO dont have the touqe to carry any kinda weight and pushing even a light boat threw water equals weight with the drag be like riding the bike with the brakes on

I have a number is sketches of different designs. When I figue out which one is best I will convert it to a mechanical to scale drawing and post here for further coments. I may have found a 3 pt hydro in Maine if it's long enough.

A 1 litre curcuit race hydro is around 15 to 16 ft long and does about 100mph, so don't be a mad scientist and wind being the next statistic, perhaps you need to go to a race meeting and have a look.
