454 mercruiser not turning over - HELP!

twin 454 mercs w/bravo 3's on 89 sr1 formula - I'm ready to give up boys, 5 trips, and 5 different problems this season...and this time, I have no answers. Port engine overheated last week - replaced impeller (which was torn to pieces). Ran for 20 minutes and ran great in driveway after impeller replaced. Put in water, ran rough at idle, stalled, had to run it at 1k rpm to keep from stalling until I got out of canal. Went to take off, with throttle down, port engine could not get past 1200 rpm....in wot position. When I got back, tried to look for usual suspects. Changed fuel filter, checked for spark, checked for fuel, cleaned carbs out. Still nothing....now it doesn't even start at all.
Anyone see anything in this write-up, and have something "pop up" that comes to mind of what it could be? Would crappy plugs show these signs? Any help would be great guys before I am at the mercy of my mechanic

Have you checked to see if the motor has water in it.

that's a great place to start, pull the plugs and see what comes out of the cylinders,if it cranks with the plugs out and you get a good spray of water out of a cylinder or two, you know it's got a head or gasket issue!

    Do a compression test first..

hard to do a compression test if it won't turn over! cranking it over with a chance of water in the cylinders will bend a rod or worse!

With the plugs out, there is no chance of bending a rod....

Pull the plugs and spin it over... if water comes out, you have either a cracked manifold or riser, blown riser gasket, blown head gasket, cracked head, hole in the head or a cracked cylinder

    If water coming out....

How costly is replacing head gasket? Is this the gasket for the manifold/riser? Or something else? Is the engine done? Or when I replace gasket, I am good? Will check plugs this week, no cracks anywhere in manifolds or gaskets

    Sooner the better

Get the plugs out 1st. Ya can't compress a liquid but ya can bend a rod(s) by trying too! Blow out any water with air hose. BBC are known to crack heads if overheated.
Be advised there are several different BBC heads. Use marine gaskets. Good luck.

You need to take off intake manifold first, valve cover, exhaust manifold, head or maybe 2 heads, Check for cracks , straight edge to see if not bent..... Check your oil too. anyway you have to change...Costly a bit.. Depend if easy to work arond the engine...Bring to a specialist or a friend mechanic... Marine engine is verry expensive... Good luck.. Come back with the number (compression test)

Thanks for all the input fellas - finally got around to taking plugs out yesterday, no corrosion or water coming out.....until I cranked it - some water spitting out on both sides. Can't see any cracks anywhere in heads/manifolds/risers. Can it be the manifold gasket? Is there a way to know what gasket is blown? Should I start today by taking off riser/manifolds? Would I see anything that would lead me to believe it is or isn't a head gasket? Thanks in advance, want to salvage the rest of my season!

    Compression test

Also, have read different things on this post and others......is it safe to do a compression test (do I need to do one?), or can I bend a rod doing this w/o the plugs in?

if u are affraid to bend a rod just crank the engine without pluggs before doing your test ..it will be free of water ...was it water or gaz that did come out ??if its water then your gonna have to remove the heads...make sure the oil pan is not fill with water ..crank bearing doesnt really like water ...if it was water that did came out don't loose your time checking compression ..........
