shop says i need a new timer base, what do you think?

motor will idle and Rev in a hose . in the water it will idle but it stalls when you put it in gear . here' s a
    few details .
    - 1986 evinrude 140
    - carbs rebuilt
    - 125 Psi compression on all 4 cyl
    - new champion plugs
    - timing set to 18 degrees
    - new fuel filter and fresh gas
    - seafoam decarb
    - link Ans sync .
the timing was 8 degrees off , and I adjusted it to spec.
I got fed up and took it to a shop . the mechanic tells me that the timer base is bad , and its $ 240 plus
labor. if the timer base was bad , would the motor run? would I have been able to adjust the timing? I
want to make sure I' m not throwing $ 300+ down the drain for his guess .

Mine idled with a bad timer base but wouldn't get on plane. Changed timer base, all is good! Surely you can find a used one in your area to try.

thank you. I haven't tried eBay. I don't mind paying for the factory part, just want to be sure it needs replaced.

If you have a DVA adapter (or have access to one) you can check all the electrics. An ohm meter will check the timer base and all the info/instructions are on the CDI Troubleshooting website.

The first thing that was not done on your list was the timing pointer, setting it to TDC. Testing the timer base with the proper tools should verify it is bad. That being said there is another condition that can cause your symptoms. If it has been overheated and or scuffed piston skirts. This condition will still give you good compression tests but no power at idle or just off idle.

another thing that should be done also is to check the spark. A bad timer base will cause one or more cylinders to lose spark..... A bad stator will cause one or both banks to lose spark and a bad power pack can cause all kinds of havoc

I'm going to keep this bit of advice, it makes perfect sense. Thank you!

When you have the flywheel off, check the magnets, be sure they are still attached and not broken. Those flywheels have a history of having the magnets come loose. Also, do not use a hammer in removing the flywheel.... using a hammer will loosen the magnets for sure.

timer base didn't fix anything. still has no power at all in the water. bogs and falls on its face under throttle. good spark, fuel, and compression still on all 4 cylinders.

I would take it back to the shop that worked on it then, they obviously didnt diagnose the issue properly.

That motor has a shift switch on it on the shift lever on the motor, if the shift cable isn't adjusted proerly or the shift shaft is binding, it will knock out 2 cylinders..... quick test is to disconnect the shift switch ......

Does it have a shift switch? Can't find one in the on line parts catalog.
